What is the difference between karat and carat?
There is often confusion between the terms carat (ct) and karat (kt).
Karat (KT) is used to indicate the purity of gold. In many countries, it is a legal standard to stamp gold jewelry with marks such as 10KT, 14KT, or 18KT. The number before the KT stamp shows how many parts out of 24 are pure gold. For example, 14KT means the piece contains 14 parts of pure gold and 10 parts of other metals. These alloys are added to improve durability, adjust color, and control the cost of fine jewelry.
Carat (CT) is a unit of weight used to measure diamonds and gemstones. Historically, traders used carob seeds on balance scales, which later evolved into the standardized carat system. Today, 1 carat equals 1/5 of a gram (0.20 g). A carat is divided into 100 points: for instance, a 0.50 ct stone weighs exactly half a carat.
At AVI THE JEWELER, we make sure to clarify this distinction so our clients fully understand both the purity of gold and the weight of gemstones in their jewelry.
How do I insure my jewelry?
At AVI THE JEWELER, we do not provide insurance directly. What we do offer is a certified appraisal, the essential document required to insure your jewelry through your preferred insurance company.
Most insurers —whether it’s through a homeowner’s or renter’s policy with an added rider, or through specialized jewelry insurance providers— require a detailed, itemized appraisal before offering coverage.
Our appraisal provides the technical and descriptive details your insurer needs to determine value, coverage, and proper replacement in case of loss or theft.
Can I create jewelry designs not listed on your site?
Absolutely. We specialize in working with clients to bring custom jewelry designs to life. Share the ideas or pieces that inspire you, and within 48 hours our designers will send you images and pricing of new designs tailored to your specifications. To begin the design process, a 30% deposit of the piece’s value is required.
Can custom jewelry designs be returned or canceled once completed?
NO. Custom jewelry is created specifically for you, based on your personal design and specifications. Because of this, custom designs cannot be canceled, returned, or refunded once they have been completed and paid in full. Each piece is crafted uniquely for the client, making it impossible to resell or repurpose. We encourage clients to carefully review design details during the process to ensure complete satisfaction before final production.
How long does it take to create a custom jewelry piece?
Once the 30% deposit has been verified, the production process for a custom piece takes approximately 15 business days (2 weeks). Each design is crafted with precision and attention to detail, ensuring the highest quality.
